Efficacy of Pre Incision Intravenous Single Dose of Cefazolin Versus Multiple Doses of Cefazolin for Antibiotic Prophylaxis for Caesarean Section

چکیده
Aim : To study the efficacy of pre-incision intravenous single dose of cefazolin versus multiple doses of cefazolin for antibiotic prophylaxis for caesarean section. Materials and methods: This was an interventional, open label, two armed, randomized study conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at PGIMER, Chandigarh from July 2013 to October 2014. Two hundred women were enrolled in the study and randomized into two groups. Group A received single dose of cefazolin whereas Group B received multiple doses of cefazolin. Primary outcome of the study was occurrence of SSI and secondary outcomes included the incidence of febrile morbidity, UTI, endometritis and neonatal outcome. Result: Incidence of SSI occurred was 8% in Group A and 10% in Group B (p-value of >0.05). There was no significant difference observed for secondary outcomes. Conclusions: Present study indicates that use of pre-incision single dose of cefazolin for antibiotic prophylaxis is equally effective compared to multiple doses of cefazolin given over 24 hours in terms of development of SSI, and other infectious morbidity including fever, UTI and endometritis.

Comparison of single versus multiple doses of antibiotic prophylaxis in reducing post-elective Caesarean section infectious morbidity.
BACKGROUND Puerperal sepsis is frequently in Caesarean section. Antibiotic prophylaxis may have significant impact in reduction of infections and thus the need to study its role in sepsis prevention systematically. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of single dose versus multiple doses of a first generation cephalosporin (with Metronidazole), to reduce postoperative in...
متن کاملA randomized controlled double blind trial comparing the effects of the prophylactic antibiotic, Cefazolin, administered at caesarean delivery at two different timings (before skin incision and after cord clamping) on both the mother and newborn
BACKGROUND Caesarean delivery (CD) increases the risk of postpartum infection by 5 to 20 fold. Prevention of surgical site infection (SSI) is the goal of antibiotic prophylaxis. This study was carried out to assess the optimum timing for prophylactic antibiotic administration and to assess the amount of the antibiotic crossing the placental barrier. METHODS Eligible mothers were recruited, af...

DESIGN Patients were administered one of three single-dose antibiotic regimens following umbilical cord clamping after cesarean section delivery. BACKGROUND Although prophylactic antibiotic medications have been shown to reduce the incidence of postoperative infectious morbidity after cesarean delivery, the most effective regimens have not been established. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the efficacy and costs of prophylaxis with cefazolin alone with cefazolin plus metronidazole. METHODS Women undergoing cesarean deli...
